What is Temperance?
What has my attention today is the word Temperance and the crazy connection this has to the 14th Major Arcana tarot card, which is also Temperance. I've been reading the Major Arcana for over 27 years and feel like I just set my eyes on this card for the first time.
How this got started today was reading page #124 of the book Good Without God, by Greg Epstein. He shines some light on Seligman and Peterson who did extensive research on human virtues. Seligman and Peterson read everything they could get their hands on and came to 6 broad virtues or clusters of virtues, that came up again and again in may types of lists from many different sources, which are: wisdom, courage, humanity, justice, temperance and transcendence.
Upon reading these 6 I got on the computer to look up the word and was shocked to see it specifically related to consumption of alcohol or the abstinence to alcohol. Over and over the word Temperance was used even as far back as to it's root to this matter.
But as I bounced around to other sites and delved deeper into the meaning I found a charming, mystical meanings to Temperance were all also related to this word/card that focused on a much broader level of a persons everyday life style. To say the least I'm fascinated and will be talking about it all day.
So now you know what's on my mind for the 2010 festive gay pride weekend here in Long Beach, California
Hugs,
Camber Hill
